When we ride past parked cars it is important that we ride 6-8 feet away from the car so that an opening door won’t hurt us. The “door zone” is the 5 feet of space that an open car door extends away from the car. If you were riding in the door zone you could be hit when a driver opens their door.
Watch how this person rides safely outside the door zone.
We don’t want any of you to ever experience being “doored” and we also want to help make sure you don’t accidentally door someone else while you’re in a car. If you’re in a car, here is a simple practice you can start doing now. It’s called the “Dutch reach” and you can do it anytime you are a passenger or a driver in a car. If it helps, you can use the following phrase:
“Scan the street for wheels and feet.”
