Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons act like small signal lights in the middle of the block that help people cross the street. They help pedestrians to cross wide streets. We want to be sure you know how to use them to cross as a pedestrian and also when you are biking in the road. Here is one installed along El Camino Real.
Just like the signal lights that you are already familiar with, there is a button for walkers/pedestrians to press
and the same signals (walk, don’t walk, time remaining) that you are used to.
Here is a video explaining how Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons work.
If you are biking in the road, you would follow the signals just like a car driver would. That means, if you see a flashing red light, be sure to check both directions before continuing through the crosswalk. If you are biking and wanting to cross the street, be sure to walk your bike across.
